Sturdy frame
Figures have just been released revealing that the three-wheeled vehicle - that noughties symbol of more money than wisdom is in a decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, while still looking stylish and easy to push.
The principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy out with an infant and a 3-year-old child and found it to be extremely durable. It handled cobbles, grass and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push and very stable on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasional pumping) offer built-in suspension that was very comfortable for my children.
Another thing to consider is the size and shape. You want the seat to be large enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat, which allows your child to lie flat and face you, while others only permit a parent-facing option.
A great choice for tackling off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is ideal for a single child as early as birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and a spacious padded seat unit. Larger wheels
Larger wheels means that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - perfect for off-road buggies. Additionally, they allow you to maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with swivel front wheels to aid you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This is also helpful when you crash into a tree root or stray kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchair s feature air-filled tyres. This means they are able to handle different terrains and are much more flexible than four wheelers. They're also lighter. However, they're prone to punctures and you'll need to have a repair kit, spare tube, and pump on hand.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo Lux are among our top 3-wheelers. They also have a suspension system which, in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with larger wheels can be quite wide and they may be a challenge to fit into narrow spaces. This can be a problem if you use it for jogging or have to squeeze through narrow doorways while on the move. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels for more compact storage.
Easy to Manoeuvre
One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. The way in which they are constructed means that the front wheels turn at a quick pace and are extremely easy to maneuver, making them ideal for difficult terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also impressed by how well it coped with kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain."
The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind if your home area is a city. If this is an issue then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better option for you.
